Planning is all most as much fun as the trip and it lasts alot longer. My son and I are considering a fly in paddle out from Atikokan to Cache (fly to Cache and paddle out to French or Nym). Have never done a fly in but have done about a dozen Quetico trips lasting from 6 to 8 days. I figure this trip at about 7 days plus one for possible lay over or winded in. Considering either early May (pre black flies) or late September. If in September, we will probably do some kind of loop out of Atikokan in early May. Cannot wait till September without having withdrawl symptoms.

Hey! mdeljb !,
I love your enthusiasm!! And the idea of a fly-in has always appealed to me....the trip we are planning is a fly-in type trip on Lac Lacroix but we are getting towed not flown. I am wondering if you are talking about a Clay Lake fly-in??? I don't think you can fly into Cache Lake. Are you planning on taking the Cache lake route back to the north after getting to Kawnipi? ;D ;D

Hey Fishguts I mean near Cache Bay of Saganaga. I think you can fly into somewhere near there. We have talked about your idea of going in thru LaCroix and then going up the Maligne River and out thru Nym. In talking to Jim Clark at Canoe Canada it seems about as cost effective (cheap) to fly into LaCroix as it is to be driven down there from Atikokan. It just appears that the route going up thru the Falls Chain, Have a Smoke, Chatterton and out would be more interesting. And be an area we haven't been through before until we hit Russel. I remain undecided about the time of year though. We went into Quetico last May (about the 11th) for a week and the black flies were just starting to come out when we left the park on about the 18th. I have no desire to be there when those little boogers are in full force but it is hard to time that right. I think we were just lucky last year.Gotta run for now.. good chatting about this stuff with you. Mike

Mike, Cache Bay sounds great! I haven't been on the Falls Chain, and that sounds interesting, I have been through Have a Smoke & Chatterton area when we went from Nym to Prairie Portage one year.......I know what you are saying about the Black Flies.....nasty bugs.....in going on June 18th we hope to miss them too. That's one of our goals this next June is to miss the B flies but still get the good fishing.

The Falls Chain is a beautiful trip. My first trip was thru there on a loop up the Man Chain and out Agnes. Since then I've been through them several out times but only in segments. qp

planning is underway,we do a guys trip to Quetico every other year, did the Falls Chain to McEwen in 04,Carp and Emerald in 06. Looking into a Basswood river entry for this year with a basecamp set up on Robinson or McIntyre.Thinking about getting a tow to Back Bay and go in through Moose bay below Basswood Falls and then come out through Sarah,North bay, Burke and Bayley bay. The other off year is usually a family trip into the BW but this year was my first year I missed going north because my oldest daughter got married.Hopefully I have the wedding paid off by next June. ;D

Any thoughts towards going up stream on the Cache River? I'm thinking this isn't done much and there may well be a reason for it. My recent planning for Q 09 will be a PP entry to French Lake on the first leg of the journey. I'm thinking the Cache River will offer more wildlife verse the McKenzie route. Any thoughts?
