I was just on a trip with a paddling partner that I will probably not invite on the next trip. He constantly was on my case for everything. Not that I know everything, but I think I know twice as much as he does when it comes to wilderness camping and the BW. Anyhow, he was constantly telling me I'm screwing things up, sometimes trying to be funny and sometimes actually being serious. To make it worse, he would agree with everything the other two guys in my group said, whether he had any clue what they were talking about or not. Really got on my nerves. He also wasn't the hardest worker at portages and around camp. To top it all off we ended up coming back a day early because he wanted to.
Anyone else have a trip ruined by someone like this? (forgive the sermon)

Wow! No, I check out potential paddling partners long before a canoe trip... Canoe trips are way to special to ruin with Knuckleheads! Especially when you can't go every year.

Yhea, some people will ruin a trip. Newbies, that know very little, will take it to the extreme. I have yet to have a bwca trip ruined, by a bad partner. But that's mainly since I only go with two people. I think in a few years, I might begin to do a lot of soloing up there, which would make that a non issue, except for when I do go tandem.

I guess it wasn't "ruined", it was still a fun trip. Just could have easily been better.

And you came back why, because of one flippin' whiner? I would have left the idiot on an island and told him that someone will be back for you...in a few days. Now...talk to the trees, you a-hole.

I took 3 newbies up the Man Chain one year "92". We were crossing the portage to No Man from That Man and one guy said. This is as far as I go. Got really rude and in my face shouting at me. Now keep in mind I'm the group leader, who had put several months into planning, and had went over in detail a loop thru the Man Chain, Falls Chain back Agnes. Prepared them as to what to expect. I finally taked him into going on to Other Man and camping there for the night. That night in camp we all were sitting around the campfire, I was looking at my maps. The one guy was the only one wanting to stop and still loudly putting up a fight about the route. So I stood up and said something like. Well guys I'm the group leader, we all agreed months ago we would do this loop. Myself being the only one in the group with a map and knowing the area, I said, guess you guys will do as me in the morning. I threw the maps in the fire and went to bed. Problem solved eh!

My brothers girlfriend in "03" decided she wasn't going to double portage or lift a finger in camp. 3rd day in on a 10 day trip. She was gung-ho and all I can do it before the trip. Don't know what happened between Horse and Gun, but 4 portages were at least 1 too many that day. We just gritted and bore it but noone ever went afterward who wasn't vetted by everyone in the group.
Oddly my bro married someone else 3 years later.
